Through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS), the UAA Honors College supports students by connecting them with and advising them in regards to scholarships, fellowships, internships, and research opportunities. If you’d like to explore these options, we encourage you to contact OURS or to contact one of our Nationally Competitive Scholarship Advisors.
You may be new to scholarships or new to UAA. Alternatively, you may be familiar with scholarships but you don’t know where to start. We can offer advice no matter which situation you’re in! Select one of the three dropdown menus below that suits you best.
Note: Nationally Competitive Scholarships shouldn’t be confused with UAA Study Abroad Scholarships, UAA Foundation Scholarships, UAA College-Specific Scholarships, or UAA Major-Specific scholarships. However, many of them do overlap.

The following list of nationally competitive scholarships and their sponsors is reflective of the most prominent programs and awards. Occasionally, new programs may be developed. Preparing for these Nationally Competitive Scholarships is an experience that provides valuable growth in character and work ethic, regardless of whether or not you receive the scholarship. Furthermore, many people who apply for Nationally Competitive Scholarships, successful or not, tend to go to and graduate from their schools of choice. The only true failure is the kind you don’t learn from. Remember that and you will be successful in your future ventures.

- Winners receive round-trip transportation to and from the host country, as well as funding to completely cover room, board, and incidental costs based on the cost of living in the host country. Furthermore, winners are covered for accidents & sickness health benefits.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in a foreign country.
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent, and they must be interested in teaching English in a foreign country.

The Fulbright National Geographic Digital Storytelling program provides an unparalleled opportunity to share observations and personal narrative with a global audience online.
- Winners receive round-trip transportation to and from the host country, as well as funding to completely cover room, board, and incidental costs based on the cost of living in the host country. Furthermore, winners are covered for accidents & sickness health benefits.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in a foreign country.
- Additionally, winners receive instruction in storytelling techniques, including effective blog writing, video production, photography, and other relevant training by official National Geographic staff.
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent, and they must be interested in conducting research in a foreign country.

- Rhodes
Eligibility: Undergraduates or those who have completed a bachelor’s degree

Purpose: To study at Oxford University in the U.K.

The Rhodes program provides an opportunity for US undergraduate students to study at Oxford University in the U.K.
- Winners receive up to $8,000 for a summer program, up to $10,000 for a semester program, or up to $20,000 for a year-long program.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in a foreign country.
- Applicants must be sophomores or juniors interested in studying underrepresented languages and cultures in a foreign country.
- Students must apply through this page by the Campus Deadline listed above. UAA nominates up to X students.
In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least a year after graduation.

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a graduate degree in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
- Winners receive up to $47,000 per year to cover:
- A personal allowance to for residence and cost of living expense
- Payment and tuition fees
- Fares to and from the US
- Applicants must be undergraduate students who graduated within 2 years prior to Campus Deadline.
- Students must apply through this page by the Campus Deadline listed above. UAA nominates X students.
- Up to forty (40) scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at any U.K. institution in any field of study.
- The One Year Marshall Scholarship is tenable for one academic year (i.e., 12 months) and cannot be extended.
- The Two Year Marshall Scholarship is tenable for two academic years (i.e., 22 months), but may be extended . . . (etc)

Eligibility: Must be admitted to Cambridge University to be eligible to apply

Purpose: To attend Cambridge University at the graduate level

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded to applicants from countries outside the U.K. to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.
- Winners receive around $15,000 per year. Full tuition coverage, airfare, family allowance, academic development, fieldwork and hardship funding are covered.
- Funding is for students to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.
- 95 new Scholarships are awarded each year: 40 in the U.S. round, and 44 in the international round.
- There are 225 Scholars from around 55 countries studying at Cambridge.
- While at Cambridge, Scholars pursue a full range of subjects available at the University and are spread through its departments and Colleges.
- The aim of the Gates Cambridge programme is to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.
- Applicants must be admitted to Cambridge University.

- Gilman

The Gilman Scholarship Program is an undergraduate grant program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means. It enables applicants to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy.
- The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving the Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
- The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
- The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs fosters mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other nations to promote friendly, sympathetic, and peaceful relations.
- Winners receive up to $5,000. However, award amounts vary depending on the length of study and student need. The average award is about $4,000.
- Applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant either at the time of application or during the term of program abroad.
- Applicants must be certified by a Filman advisor at UAA. Contact Leslie Tuovinen at latuovinen@alaska.edu for more details.
- Applicants are eligible to receive an $8,000 Critical Need Language Award (CNLA) if studying a critical need language.
- Applicants must be Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors at the graduate level who are interested in studying abroad.

- Critical Language

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program provides fully-funded short-term intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences overseas each summer.
The CLS Program languages include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.
- Winners receive funding for room and board (often with a host family). They also receive a full cultural program, host community language partners, academic credit, and domestic and international airfare.
- Final monetary awards depend on country, program, and length of study.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in a foreign country.
- Applicants must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

- Schwarzman
Eligibility: Must have Undergraduate degree prior to enrollment in program
Deadlines:
- Campus- Late August/Early September
- National- Late September/Early October
Purpose: To study China in Beijing

The Schwarzman Scholars Program is designed to help future leaders meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond by preparing them to better understand China’s culture, economy, governance, and evolving role in the world. Schwarzman scholars will live in Beijing for a year of study.
- Winners receive funding that covers all the costs of the program, including tuition fees, room and board, travel to and from Beijing at the beginning and end of the academic year, an in-country study tour, requires course books and supplies, a Lenovo laptop and smartphone, health insurance, and, last bu not least, a personal stipend of $3,500.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in Beijing.
- Applicants must have earned an undergraduate degree prior to enrollment in the Schwarzman program.

- Soros
Eligibility: Current Seniors or Graduate Students
Deadlines:

Purpose: To promote the education of the children of immigrants

Every year, the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans awards thirty (30) Fellowships to immigrants, and the children of immigrants, who are pursuing graduate education in the United States.
- Winners receive up to $90,000 USD (up to $25,000 per year stipend, or up to $20,000 per year tuition support). Awards support up to two years of full-time graduate study in any field (with the exception of online programs).
- In addition to funding, Soros applicants join a community of over 500 new Americans with family origins in over 75 countries around the world.
- Applicants must be either undergraduate seniors or graduate students.

- Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA)
Eligibility: Current Juniors

Purpose: To study abroad and work in public service

The Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) fellowship helps students achieve a Master’s or joint degree, typically in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field and pursue a career in public service. The organization does this through the intensive study provided by participation in a Junior Summer Institute (JSI), with partnerships with universities across the country, and through an alumni network that provides opportunities to connect with nearly 4,000 individuals who share the same interest in public service.
- Winners receive up to $1,500 in funding. Your host university will help pay for travel expenses, and it will cover all costs of tuition, room and board, supply books, study materials, and a personal stipend for the summer.
- Students who are admitted for a Master’s degree will receive a one-time minimum of $5,000.
- Students receive a fee waiver when applying to schools that are members of the PPIA Graduate School Consortium.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in a foreign country.
- Applicants must be juniors at the undergraduate level who are interested in studying abroad.

- Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship
Eligibility: Must have STEM Undergraduate degree

Purpose: To teach STEM fields in high-need secondary schools in Georgia and New Jersey

The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship (WWTF) seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with backgrounds in the STEM fields--science, technology, engineering, and mathematics--into teaching in high-need secondary schools in Georgia and New Jersey.
- Winners receive up to $30,000 for a Master’s degree tuition and fees. Any remaining money is used for living expenses.
- Applicants must possess a STEM degree at the undergraduate level.

The Harry S. Truman Foundation, a memorial to our thirty-third President, supports the graduate education and professional development of outstanding young people committed to public service leadership.
- Winners receive up to $30,000 for 2-3 years of graduate study.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in either the United States or foreign countries.
- Applicants must be a junior interested in a career in the public sector. Students in a five-year program may apply in their third of fourth year. U.S. Citizenship is required.

- Udall
Eligibility: Current Juniors, U.S. Citizens

The Udall program awards merit-based scholarships to college sophomores and juniors pursuing studies leading to a public service career in tribal health, tribal public policy, or the environment. Recipients participate in a five-day orientation in Arizona to learn from and network with experts, peers, and members of the Udall family.
- Winners receive up to $7000 for tuition, fees, room and board, and books and supplies
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in either the United States or foreign countries
- Applicants must be sophomores and juniors interested in a public service career in tribal health, tribal public policy, or the environment.
- Students must apply through this page by the Campus Deadline listed above.
- UAA nominates up to X students.
Special note: A student applying in either the tribal public policy or Native health care category must be an enrolled member or descendant of an enrolled member of a state- or federally-recognized tribe in the US or First Nations of Canada.

Purpose: To study less commonly taught languages around the world

The Boren program provides an opportunity for US undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to US interests, including parts of Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
- Winners receive up to $8,000 for a summer program, up to $10,000 for a semester program, or up to $20,000 for a year-long program.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in a foreign country.
- Applicants must be sophomores or juniors interested in studying underrepresented languages and cultures in a foreign country.

The Thomas R. Pickering Fellows Program provides outstanding undergraduate and graduate students financial support, mentoring, and professional development to prepare them academically and professionally for a career in the Department of State Foreign Service.
- Winners receive up to $37,000 annually for academic expenses, as well as two (2) paid summer internships (domestic and international).
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in either the United States or a foreign country.
- Applicants must be either juniors at the undergraduate level or graduate students.

- Germanic Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

Purpose: To study, research, or intern in Germany

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites highly qualified undergraduate students to apply for funding for one of the following: (1) to study in Germany; (2) to pursue senior thesis research in Germany; (3) to intern in Germany.
- Scholarships may be granted for either a semester or a full academic year. Winners receive the following:
- A monthly stipend of 650 euros
- Additional funds to help defray travel and research expenses
- Health insurance
- Applicants must be a sophomore or junior at the undergraduate level who are interested in studying, researching, or interning in Germany.

- Barry S. Goldwater

Purpose: To help in obtaining advanced degrees in science, engineering, and math

The central objective of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation is identifying and supporting a significant pool of highly-qualified undergraduates who will subsequently be obtaining advanced degrees and becoming leading scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
- Winners receive up to $7,500 per year. The awards pays for tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
- Funding is for students to pursue advanced degrees science, engineering, and mathematics.
- Applicants must be sophomores or juniors at the undergraduate level.

- Humanity in Action
Eligibility: Sophomores to individuals completing undergraduate degrees within two years of applying to the program; (e.g., individuals who graduated in 2016 and 2017 are eligible for the 2018 fellowship)

Purpose: To study and participate in the community of a European country

The Humanity in Action (HiA) fellowship brings together international groups of students and recent graduates from the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, and Ukraine to explore historical and contemporary issues of human rights, diversity, and active and responsible citizenship. While studying in one of these countries, students will conduct an Action Project that gets them involved in the communities they choose to study in.
- Winners receive funding that covers the costs of participating and accommodation during the fellowship program. The only cost incurred by the applicant is the round-trip airfare from the US to their program city of choice.
- Funding is for graduate or professional schools in a European country.
- Applicants must be sophomores at the undergraduate level who will be completing their degrees within two years of applying to the Humanity in Action program. For example, individuals who graduated in 2016 and 2017 are eligible for the 2018 fellowship.
